Haute Route Ski Tour

Skiing the High Alps - Chamonix to Zermatt

EuropeBackcountry Skiing / SplitboardingMechanized SkiingSki Mountaineering

The Haute Route ski tour is the most famous ski tour in the Alps and a true must-do for backcountry ski enthusiasts. Linking the historic mountain towns of Chamonix, France, and Zermatt, Switzerland, this legendary high-alpine journey covers roughly 120 kilometers with over 6,000 meters of ascent and descent across classic ski mountaineering terrain.

You’ll step off the beaten path with a more customized approach that highlights the best downhill skiing, includes extra days in standout locations, and still follows the spirit of the traditional route. Expect high-alpine glacier crossings, long traverses between valleys, remote cols and seracs, and unforgettable hut-to-hut travel through the heart of the Alps as we travel from Chamonix towards Verbier then Arolla and finally arriving in Zermatt.

The itinerary for what I deem the ‘downhill Haute route’ includes an additional day in Chamonix to shake-off the jetlag with some freeride, then off we go on day two. We will also take advantage of a the periodic taxi or shuttle to highlight the downhill potential in each area. And even have the option to add extra days in some of these special locations with incredible lodging experiences during the planning process. Finally, there’s the potential to use helicopter assistance, if so desired. All the while, still maintaining the general course of the traditional Haute Route.
